In simple terms gamification means rewarding engagement with positive feedback from the site, campaign, message or product itself to the individual. Further, Gamification entails a rule system for those rewards. Like all games (team sports, board games, card games, gambling games, etc.) User Engagement that achieves the sought action, assignment or achievement gets rewarded.
Contrary to what you might think, cash is not, by itself, the most effective reward in gaming.
